Kolkata: The Left in West Bengal is unhappy over the Election Commission's decision to hold a five-phased Assembly polls in the state, starting April 17.
Bengal's Left Front chairman Biman Bose has accused the EC of being 'discriminatory when compared to the election dates in other states'.
"This is unprecedented. Despite this fact, we accept this. But considering the law-and-order situation of West Bengal, they could do otherwise," Bose said.
The Trinamool Congress has, however, welcomed the staggered five-phase poll schedule and hoped that it would usher in a change in the state.
"We welcome the Election Commission's announcement of a five-phase poll in the state. We will abide by all the guidelines and directives issued by the commission," Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said.
Noting that the polls would begin two days after Bengali New Year Day, Banerjee said: "I am hopeful that the polls in the New Year will usher in a change in the state."
Asked whether she felt that the EC's decision to hold a five-phase poll would help in conducting a 'free and fair' elections, Banerjee replied: "The commission has done what it
has thought right based on the information with it."
