New Delhi: Eighteen years after getting into the illegal arms manufacturing trade, a UP native was arrested in Delhi for supplying ammunition to dreaded western Uttar Pradesh gangsters.

Accused Iqbal, who ran the arms factory in Karawal Nagar, confessed during interrogation that while he was behind bars in 2014, he got in touch with the imprisoned criminals and got contracts for supply of firearms.

Iqbal sold a semi-automatic carbine between Rs 1 lakh to 1.5 lakh, semi-automatic pistol for Rs 40,000 and country-made pistols for Rs 5,000.

Acting on a tip-off, the crime branch of Delhi police, busted the gun manufacturing factory last week. Iqbal had rented a house and turned it into his arms hub.

Iqbal was carrying firearms — which was supposed to be handed over to a customer — at the time of his arrest. Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol with four live cartridges from his possession.

During interrogated, he confessed that since 1996 he had been in the illegal business. He learnt the technique of manufacturing firearms from his father, who ran an illegal arms manufacturing factory in Bulandshahr.

In 1996-97, he started working at an arms shop in Bulandshahar and learnt how to repair sophisticated arms.

He shifted to Karawal Nagar in 2000 and bought the apparatus required for running a firearm factory. He started supplying firearms to the criminals along with one accomplice Kartik, who was wanted by Ambedkar Nagar police station.

Iqbal used to manufacture semi-automatic pistols and carbines by obtaining raw material from the local market.

He confessed that he had supplied more than 25 carbines, 50 semi-automatic pistols and more than 100 country-made pistols to various criminals in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Police recovered three country made pistol along with six live rounds and two used rounds along with raw materials, including springs, barrels, magazines, several unfinished and semi-finished firearms and instruments used in manufacturing of pistols and carbines.
