Chennai: The Election Commission has named Latika Saran as the new Police Commissioner of Chennai replacing R Natarajan.
Natrajan’s transfer was ordered for him praising the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after the model code of conduct had come into force. It came following the March announcement of Assembly elections in four states and a Union Territory.
The poll body from among a panel of three names sent by the Tamil Nadu government has selected Saran’s name. She will be the first woman commissioner after the government appoints her for the post.
Saran is a 1976 batch IPS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre. She has served in the CBI and was a senior officer in the crime branch. She is currently Additional Director General Police (Administration).
Saran has also been awarded the President's medal for meritorious service, and is a recipient of the 1994 Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
