Accusing DMK president M Karunanidhi of  indulging in doublespeak on all vital issues — the Cauvery water dispute, KKNPP, power shortage, diesel price hike and FDI in retail — Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday urged him to stop doing this in the interest of the people of Tamil Nadu.

“Whatever be the step I take to safeguard the rights of the people of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi has been opposing them by issuing contradictory statements laced with meaningless arguments. I request Karunanidhi to end this habit in the interest of the people of Tamil Nadu,” the CM said in a statement.

“Karunanidhi who has been in the habit of betraying Tamil Nadu on Cauvery issue, is now trying to show that he is much concerned about the issue and trying to create an impression that Karnataka has refused to release water only because she had failed to accept the decision of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to release 9,000 cusecs of water,” Jayalalithaa said.

Jayalalithaa said on Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant issue too, Karunanidhi engaged in doublespeak. Initially, Karunanidhi wanted the plant to be commissioned immediately. Now, he is saying that the State government should hold talks with the agitators.

On the power front, she said Karunanidhi had not only failed to take steps to increase the power generation, but also to sign agreements with other States to buy power at a lesser price.

With regard to the diesel price hike, the CM posed a pertinent question: “Karunanidhi should clarify to the people whether his son, Union Minister M K Alagiri, a member of the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs which gives nod for diesel prices, attended the meeting on the recent price hike and registered his opposition or supported it, or whether he had failed to attend the meet.”
