The 18th Asian Junior Handball Championship is being held in Amman, Jordan’s capital, from July 14. This young man from Karnataka has made history by being the first from the district of Chikkamagaluru to be selected for the U-20 Indian team.
Local18 reports exclusively on the boy’s achievements, who also happens to be the only Kannadiga in the team. Going by the information given, Yashas has represented the state handball team for a record five times. While the last time, he was awarded the captaincy of the Karnataka state team.
Yashas is the son of Girish and Taramani, residents of the Chikkamagaluru district. He is a student in a second-year BE (Bachelor of Engineering) course, pursuing it at the Adichunchanagiri Institute of Technology (AIT).
In similar news, Harshil Menaria from Panera, in Udaipur, is another name to join the squad of the 18th Men’s Asian Handball Junior Championship. While playing for the Rajasthan team, Harshil received two silver medals, according to Kailash Menaria, the spokesperson of the Menaria community.
According to the information given on the official website, the sport will be played at the Princess Sumaya Hall in Amman. It is being hosted by the Jordan Handball Federation, for a third time. Previously, the federation hosted the games in the years 2008 and 2016. Players born on and after 2004 are being featured in the championship. The website further states that these games are a qualifying event for the 25th IHF Men’s Junior (U21) Handball World Championship, going to be held in Poland, in June/July 2025. The teams in the top four of this championship will secure a spot at the World Championship. The games commenced in Jordan on July 14 and are expected to continue till July 25. The participating countries include Japan, Korea, Oman, India, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and more.
