Ranchi: With no access to clean drinking water, students of a primary school in Jharkhand's Dumka district have been drinking water from a drain for the last 14 years.

Water from the same drain is being used to cook mid-day meal at a primary school in Daldali.

The students are forced to walk at least half a kilometer to access the unclean drain water. Even repeated requests to officials have gone on deaf ears.

"We have been requesting officials every month to install a hand pump in the school premises but to no avail," said a teacher, Katki Prasad Rawat.

The school which has 100 students was established in 2002 and since then there is no water for staff or the students.

Speaking to ETV, students at the school claim that the drain water they use is clean. However, the students also informed that their classmates go sick regularly perhaps because of the water contamination.

The drain is also used by animals to drink water. The local people also use the same water to wash clothes and utensils.

The school cook Suraj Muni also accepts that they use drain water to cook the meal.
