Jessica case: SIT probing officials
State Counsel told Delhi HC that the SIT had so far registered three fresh FIRs and was also probing the action of police officials.

New Delhi: Delhi Government on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that the ongoing probe by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the botched up investigations of the Jessica Lall murder case would not only cover the "lapses" committed by the investigating police officials but also their "connivance" in facilitating the acquittal of the accused.

State Counsel Mukta Gupta told a Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vijender Jain and Justice Kailash Gambhir that the SIT had so far registered three fresh FIRs in the case including one against socialite and key witness, Bina Ramani.

Besides registering an FIR against Ramani for allegedly filing a false affidavit on her nationality, FIRs have also been registered against Chandigarh-based doctor J S Bedi for allegedly issuing false medical certificates and police officials whose "lapses" in the investigations and alleged connivance resulted in the acquittal of all nine accused in the sensational murder of the ramp model turned bartender.

She clarified that the SIT was probing not only the alleged lapses in the investigations by the officials but also their "connivance" in helping all the accused get acquitted.

The Delhi police counsel's submission came during the hearing of the case by the Bench which had earlier while taking suo moto cognizance of the acquittal sought a status report on the matter.

However, since the Delhi police had already appealed against the acquittals, Justice Jain today trasnferred the matter to the Bench of Justice R S Sodhi and P K Bhasin which is dealing with appeal filed against the February 21, order passed by the Trial Judge S L Bhayanna acquitting all the nine accused in the murder.
