Tiruvannamalai forest department has cracked down on an interstate wild animal smuggling gang and arrested four of the gang members by meticulously laying a trap.
The department also rescued a three-month-old spotted deer and five pigeons from the gang.
Forest department sources said the well-planned trap and the joint effort by the district forest department and its counterparts in Bangalore, and the Wild Life Crime Bureau (WLCB) resulted in the arrest of the offenders on Thursday.
Those arrested were Rama Reddy (58) and Vishnu Kumar (25) of Bangalore, Madesh (25) of Tiruvannamalai and Elumalai (25) of Mel Chengam in Chengam Taluk. “The gang was involved in smuggling deer to Bangalore and selling them there,” said a forest official. The officials received a tip-off about the illegal trade and smuggling of wild animals from Tiruvannamalai to the neighbouring states. Based on information, officials attached to WLCB approached one of the gang members as a prospective client. The undercover man caught the offenders red handed at Mel Chengam, said Tiruvannamalai Ranger Karunakaran. Officials filed a case and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the gang members.
