VIJAYAWADA: Illicit liquor has claimed eight lives at Portanagar hamlet of Kinchurainigudem panchyat of Mylavaram mandal in Krishna district on Saturday. The deceased were identified as Azmira Chinnamma (50), Lavuri Balu (45), Moodu Gopi (45), Lavuri Soni (70), Banothu Kalsu, Donadri Pandu, Bhukya Thavudia and Bukya badriya. Over 10 others have been hospitalised and their condition is said to be critical.According to information reaching here, as many as 25 people consumed illicit liquor on Saturday morning that is brewed at the hamlet. Consumption of illicit liquor is said to be a common practice among people of the hamlets in Mylavaram area. But several of them developed vomiting sensation and fell sick after consuming the illicit liquor.While two victims died at the village, two others died away while undergoing treatment at Mylavaram government hospital. Two more victims died at a private hospital in Vijayawada and another victim is undergoing treatment at the same hospital. Mylavaram CI V Bangarraju, SI A Durgaprasad along with other policemen rushed to the hamlet. An excise official team led by its deputy commissioner S Arvinder Singh also visited the hamlet. Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has ordered a probe into the incident and promised all help to the kin of the victims.Meanwhile, Mylavaram MLA Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao staged a dharna in front of the excise office in Mylavaram holding the excise department responsible for its failure in curbing illicit liquor and demanded an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the bereaved families.
