New Delhi: Indian Institute of Management (IIM) authorities have taken offence at steel baron Laxmi Mittal?s comment that IIMs need to broaden their syllabus to help students get a global perspective.
Mittal stated that the institutes were teaching the students about 'yesterday'.
Mittal made these statements during a meeting of the IIM Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad directors in Mumbai on Thursday.
He added that the students did not know anything about Information Technology and that the textbooks did not have any information on the subject either.
The IIM directors feel that Mittal had no right to comment on the syllabus especially as he has no idea what the curriculum contains and more so because he has never visited any institute to get an idea of what was being taught there.
The directors said that Mittal should try and understand the way in curriculums were developed before making a critical comment.
Mittal justified his stand by saying that he had been asked what should business schools do to improve the focus on research and development and he had told them what he felt was right.
He also added that the students he had recruited to Mittal Steels from the IIMs lacked comprehensive outlook.
IIM directors were surprised at this viewpoint because they claim their students have been recruited by companies of international status in past and none have given a critical assessment of the students.
The Indian Institute of Management has recently signed an agreement with top French management school Essec for a double-degree programme with at the French Embassy.
Mittal Steel had recently recruited a PhD student from IIM Ahmedabad for his Kazakhstan plant.
