New Delhi: As the LTTE nears its defeat, India's worst fears may come true. Notwithstanding Sri Lanka's insistence that LTTE is on the verge of extinction, India fears an increased threat from the Tamil Tigers whose chief V Prabhakaran continues to be at large.
Intelligence reports have warned that LTTE operatives may flee Sri Lanka and enter India along with Tamil refugees.
The conventional military capability of the LTTE is almost over but the fund-raising and international operations are still on. Intelligence sources also believe that LTTE is still capable of a guerrilla warfare. India believes the outfit will continue to be dangerous and capable of carrying out terror strikes till its structure is in tact.
India is screening all the refugees coming to this country from Sri Lanka to make sure no Tamil tiger is among them. Authorities have also sent two expert teams to de-mine regions which are free of LTTE-control, along with team of doctors and relief worth Rs 100 crore.
Meanwhile, the Navy, the Coast Guard and troops in the Southern Command are on alert to prevent LTTE elements from entering Indian territory, says Army Vice-Chief Lt Gen Nobel Thamburaj.
LTTE, while facing reverses in the conflict with Sri Lankan army, had said India was against them.
