Kolkata: World hockey legend and India's triple Olympic hockey gold and silver medallist Leslie Claudius died in Kolkata on Sunday at the age of 85. He was suffering from liver cirrhosis.
"He died at 3:25 p.m. due to multi-organ failure. He had been admitted with acute complications related to cirrhosis of liver," Woodlands Hospital public relations officer Suparna Sengupta said.
Claudius was part of India's gold-medal winning team at London 1948, Helsinki 1952 and Melbourne 1956. He also won a silver at the Rome 1960 Games, which made him a Guinness world record-holder for the maximum number of Olympic medals in hockey.
After retiring, Claudius was also awarded the Padma Shri award in 1971.
Claudius, Anglo-India by descent, is survived by his three sons and four other other members (Keshav Dutt, Grahanandan Singh, Jaswant Singh Rajput and Balbir Singh Senior) of the 1948 team.
