Kolkata: A Hindu fringe outfit celebrating their 10th anniversary heckled and attacked a group of journalists in Kolkata on Wednesday, leaving one of them seriously injured.

The scuffle broke out on Wednesday afternoon when a group of journalists had gathered at a public forum to speak to a family of 14 who had converted to Hinduism. Soon, some Hindu Samhati supporters began abusing and beating up the journalists to stop them from talking to the family.

The media persons retaliated but were overpowered by the supporters of the fringe outfit.

The scuffle broke out in the presence of police personnel and the founder of Hindu Samhati, Tapan Ghosh, who is yet to make a comment on the incident.

Kolkata Police have arrested three persons in connection with the incident while Ghosh has been detained for questioning.

Police are now trying to zero in on the others who were involved in the attack on media persons.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress leader Firhad Hakkim said, “This is being done in the name of Hindu Samhati, members of which are uneducated and political. Those who are speaking out against a religion cannot do any good to people. What they and the BJP are trying to do in Bengal in the name of politics will not work here.”

The Left Front too has condemned the attack on journalists. CPIM leader Mohammad Salim said, “They are disturbing the social harmony of Bengal and misguiding the Bengali youth, inciting communal hatred. I demand stern action by the state government against all those involved in the attack.”
