Ranchi: Ranchi Rays on Thursday named Englishman Ashley Jackson as their captain and former India coach Harendra Singh as their coach for the Hockey India League starting January 22.
Jackson was part of the England squad that won bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games last year.
Ranchi Rays also announced the coaching staff for the team with Harendra as the head coach. Clarence Lobo comes on board as assistant coach and A B Subbiah will the goalkeeping coach.
"Going by his experience and present performance, we feel that Ashley Jackson is the right choice for the captain. Under his able leadership, the team will do well and he will make the Ranchi fans proud by putting up a terrific show," team owner and India ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said.
"I hope Mr. Harendra Singh, as a coach, will nurture the players and will bring the best of them. You need a right coach who knows the strengths of his players and capitalise on it."
Jackson said he would try to lead by example.
"It's a great feeling to be named captain of Ranchi Rays, the Ranchi fans are the best in the league and it will be a real honour to lead our talented team out in front of our home fans.
"I will be trying my best to lead from the front and alongside some of the best talents in the world this promises to be another exciting HIL in Ranchi. The entire team is very excited and we are ready to give some wonderful performances in the tournament."
