At Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, Renuka Chowdhury says talks on with US, UK to get justice for dumped NRI brides.

New Delhi: The Centre is in negotiations with the US and UK to get justice for women who have been deserted by their NRI husbands.

"Why should a woman who has got married here get divorced abroad? If they (NRI men) violate laws, they should be called back home," Minister of State for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury said at the Pravasi Bhartiya Divas on Monday.

"I am in talks with the US and the UK about the existing treaties between us to ensure that Indian laws apply to people no matter where they reside," she said.

Punjab, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala are states from where the government has received the maximum complaints of women being dumped by NRI husbands.

CPI(M) Politburo leader Brinda Karat said over 30,000 Indian women have been abandoned after marrying NRIs. The number in Punjab’s Doab region alone is 15,000.

Karat also spoke about Indian women who work as domestic helps in foreign countries and are often paid poorly, harassed and abused sexually. "There are three million women who work as domestic help in the Gulf region, but they have no access to labour laws."

Karat wanted officials at Indian embassies to be trained to help harassed women and said the government would sign labour welfare treaties with nations that have a large number of Indian workers.

Chowdhury released a pamphlet which lists precautions parents must take in NRI marriages. The pamphlet, prepared by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, asks parents to check a groom’s antecedents and insist on a registered marriage.

"The pamphlet will provide parents with some do's and don'ts while going in for an NRI marriage for their daughter. They don't have to grope in the dark anymore," Chowdhury said.
