Govt wakes up to Manjunath's call
The Petroleum Ministry has suggested computerised monitoring of sales at petrol pumps and plans to circulate a blueprint soon.

New Delhi: Indian Oil executive S Manjunath might not have lost his life in vain — the Petroleum Ministry is working on an action plan to stop adulteration of fuel.

A new Anti-Adulteration Enforcement Directorate will be set up.

The ministry will also allow third party certification. According to this, independent labs will test fuels for purity.

The ministry has said that it will circulate a blueprint of this action plan soon.

Ministry officials say that a review of marketing guidelines and stricter policing of retail outlets have also been planned.

The Petroleum Ministry has also strongly emphasised the need for a proper regulatory mechanism to ensure systematic development of the Indian gas market in a cost-effective, efficient, safe and competitive manner.

The ministry has noted that in line with its intentions of setting up an independent regulator for the downstream petroleum sector, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Bill has been reintroduced in Parliament.

The policy also aims to encourage investments for the development of pipeline infrastructure, from both the public and private sectors in a bid to provide a competitive environment and protect consumers' interests.
