Close on the heels of a festival for the budding Odissi dancers of the State; the state-owned Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre (ORC) hosted a similar festival for the budding Odissi singers in the Capital last week much to the cheer of the people who were worried over the future of Odissi music. The festival featured eight vocalists – all below the age of 15 – being groomed by eight different gurus and teachers. They were Manoj Ojha (disciple of Chaitanya Mohapatra), Prativa Das (Gopal Chandra Panda), Ipsita Panda (Dheeraj Mohapatra), Vineet Kumar Surekha (Himansu Sekhar Swain), Sruti Mishra (Sangita Panda), Jigyansa Mishra (Nimakanta Routray), Abhisek Panda (Harapriya Pati) and Durgashree Sadangi (Balakrushna Jena). Some of the performers were outstanding in their recital. Manoj, with whom the concert commenced, was one among them. He is a seventh standard student of BJEM School in Bhubaneswar. Eleven-year-old Sruti, the youngest of all performers, proved that music flows in her veins. Grand-daughter of the veteran musician Guru Gopal Chandra Panda, she is the daughter of accomplished vocalist Sangita Panda. Prativa, a student of standard nine at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Integral Education in Bhubaneswar was also another such promising prodigy. It was a moment of triumph for the budding vocalists who were invited on stage for special felicitation and photo session with their gurus and the dignitaries of the evening.
