Srinagar: The half century-old association between hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani and the Jamaat-e-Islami appears set to end.
The reason behind it would be that Geelani failed to respond to a notice by Jamaat-e-Islami asking him to sever ties with his Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Kashmir party.
In what could be a major jolt to the political career of Geelani and three of his close aides, the Majlis-e-Shoora or Advisory Council of the Jamaat has decided that they will not be able to contest any of the posts in the party.
The Jamaat on June 26 had issued notices to its members who were part of the Tehreek, floated by Geelani in 2004, to part ways with the new party and return to the parent body by June 30.
Those members of Jamaat who fail to comply will not be eligible to hold any office in the party and not be included in any decision-making body, the notice said.
The four members, including Geelani, have not responded to the notice, Jamaat chief Syed Nazir Ahmad Kashani said.
Geelani joined the Jamaat in 1950 and was among the its towering leaders till 2003.
