New Delhi: Mahie Gill was working in Punjabi films before coming to Hindi films. She appeared in Sudhir Mishra's 'Khoya Khoya Chand' for a brief moment before properly making it to Hindi films via 'Dev D'.

Anurag Kashyap's 'Dev D' featured Gill as a bold Punjabi girl who becomes victim to an essentially male point of view of women's sexuality. The complex character of Paro gave Mahie Gill the scope of showcasing her wide range of talent.

She did not disappoint the director either. Gill excelled throughout the film making it difficult for her male counterpart Abhay Deol, another excellent actor, to match the level.

Some of the scenes between Deol and Gill were so full of energy that the audiences were left spellbound. One such sequence between the two took place in sugarcane's farm, where the couple makes love which was highly intimate as per the conventional standard of Hindi films.

This one scene established Mahie Gill as a bold heroine in such a way that it has become difficult for the actress to shed the image.

'Gulaal' and 'Aagey Se Right' presented Mahie Gill in small characters.

'Gulaal' to some extent gave her the chance to act but the role itself had so short screen duration that Gill could not do much. However, she was noticeable in songs, which again consolidated her image of a bold girl further.

'Dabangg', 'Mirch', 'Utt Pataang' followed 'Aagey Se Right' but none of these except 'Dabangg' did well at the box office.

'Dabangg' proved to be the box office champion but the film completely belonged to Salman Khan. Whatever of the credit was left went to Sonakshi Sinha and the songs.

Ram Gopal Varma showcased Mahie Gill as Anusha Chawla in 'Not A Love Story', another film with dominant male gaze.

Quite often the camera tried to enter into her skirts and she seemed completely at ease with it, which might have established her brilliant acting skills but failed to present Gill as someone who can be considered as bold yet versatile.

Her gross lip locks with fellow actor Deepak Dobriyal neither helped the film nor her already existing bold girl image.

The failure of the director Varma became the curse of the heroine. The poor lead lady was merely reduced to someone who was extremely vulnerable and who liked to throw her clothes away at any and every possible moment.

Now, when Mahie Gill's new film 'Sahib Biwi aur Gangster' is scheduled to hit the theaters on Friday, she is again in news for her extrovert depiction of a passionate wife.

The promos of the film along with media reports suggest that the audiences should once again expect Mahie Gill in a bold avatar.

If the rumours come true and the film does well at the commercial level then Mahie Gill is going to be trapped in her bold image for some more time.
