New Delhi: The protests were a first since soldiers of the ruling military junta crushed a pro-democracy uprising over a month ago.

The monks chanted as they marched through the city centre of Pakkoku. The protests come in the wake of UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari scheduling another visit to Myanmar. He will arrive on Saturday to convince the generals to hold talks with detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Official media say 10 people were killed in the biggest anti-junta protests on September 26 and 27, while Western governments say the real toll is likely to be far higher.

Soldiers had fired warning shots over the heads of monks early last month, triggering nationwide protests against the regime.

Earlier, Hundreds of monks and students were killed and thousands arrested in the army crackdown that followed the protest.

The international community condemned the crackdown and the US announced fresh sanctions against 14 senior government officials there.

Myanmar, formerly Burma has been under military rule since 1962. First under Gen Ne Win whose Burmese road to socialism turned the country into an economic shambles. Ne Win was toppled in the wake of the army crushing a popular rebellion in 1988.

The current regime was instrumental in disregarding the results of a popular election in 1990.
