Chennai: Passive euthanasia is legal in India but forced euthanasia is not. Filmmaker Ansh Singh Luthra released a documentary which reveals about forced euthanasia of elders in Virudhuanagar in Tamil Nadu.

The sleepy village Virudhuanagar is located 500 kms from Chennai and is known for the practice of Thalaikoothal- a form of forced euthanasia for elders.

As elders gather in the village of Virudhuanagar in Tamil Nadu, they are concerned about what the future holds for them.

"This is done is great secrecy. There are many other forms of this practice, but this is the most common." said Luthra.

According to locals, the victim is often given oil baths and various drinks, possibly to induce shock.

"I am afraid that my wife or son could perform this on me" an elder person said.

Many in this village fear for their future. The local administration is also mum on the matter.

Even as the debate on euthanasia continues in India, many questions remain unanswered about how our system deals with such practises.
