KOCHI: World's first electronic book on spices, The Agronomy and Economy of Black Pepper and Cardamom The 'King' and 'Queen' of Spices,' was launched in London and other world capitals.
It took more than five years for author Kodoth Prabhakaran Nair to compile the book in electronic form. The book will also be available in print format. It follows the success of an earlier electronic book also authored by Prabhakaran Nair on the world's important tree crops. The book will be displayed at the British Library, London, and the State Congressional Library, Washington. In all, there are 30 chapters covering various aspects, including an exclusive chapter on the nutrient buffer power concept, a soil management technique, developed by the author after more than three decades of research in Europe, Asia and Africa.

This is an effective alternative to the chemically propelled industrial agriculture of Green Revolution that has resulted in adverse environmental fallout on Indian soils. Black Pepper has a chequered history. It was in fact the 'spice war' between the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British that led to the colonisation of India, which began with the landing of Vasco da Gama on Kappad beach. In the book, Prbhakaran Nair traces the origin, history, global spread, development, agronomy, nutrition, economy, world trade, pharmacopoeia and end products of the two spice crops of the world, known as the 'king' and 'queen' of spices.
