KOCHI: With the arrival of exam season in the state, the pressure of performing is at its peak again. To release examination-related stress and to help students cope with the pressure, the Directorate of Higher Secondary Education has launched ‘We Help’ centres across the state. This will function under the Career Guidance and Adolescent Counselling Cell. The centres offer 24-hour free telephone counselling service to students. Apart from tele-counselling, personal counselling sessions are also provided at the counselling centres specially opened for the purpose.“Each district will have a counselling centre, where students can speak directly to counsellors,” said Saira Banu, Counsellor at the ‘We Help’ centre in Ernakulam. The counselling centre for Ernakulam district is functioning at St Teresa’s Convent Girls’ Higher Secondary school. It was inaugurated by Dr Shaju George, Psychiatrist, Lourdes Hospital. Likewise, each district has its own counselling centre to assist students. Saira Banu said the help centre will have one male and one female counsellor. “The concept will be similar in all the districts. She said that the venture has received overwhelming response from the students and their parents. “The help centres have been getting over a significant number of calls everyday since commencing operations. Most of the callers are young girls who do not know how to tackle the exam stress. Occasionally, there are calls from parents too,” she said.
