BANGALORE: If the commencement of clearing encroachment at Kalpally Burial Ground is anything to go by, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities have pulled up their socks to settle the issue. On December 10, the City Express had published a news item titled ‘Encroachment on graveyard too’ explaining how a person had encroached 15x15 ft space at Kalpally Burial Ground to bury a body of his relative and constructed a wall and put up iron grills. Many people from Doddigunta and Cox Town have expressed their shock and dismay over the negligence of BBMP authorities who are supposed to prevent misuse of the space at burial grounds. When contacted S B Nagaraj, Health Officer, BBMP, said he had already directed Deputy Health Officer Suresh to clear the encroachment. It is suspected that the encroacher had tried to convince the BBMP authorities about the need to have extra space to bury bodies of his relatives in future but the latter insisted him to clear the encroachment. “The person by name Ravi Narayan had approached the Joint Commissioner and requested him to give one or two days to clear the encroachment. He had already removed half of the iron grills put up on the wall. I had asked him to demolish the wall as early as possible,’’ said Suresh, Deputy Health Officer. Now, the BBMP had issued a notice to Muniraju, writer of Kalpally Burial Ground, asking him an explanation on how such encroachment took place at the burial ground. “I have received a notice asking me not to allow any construction of samadhis at the burial ground. The BBMP had also issued notices to four grave diggers asking them not to indulge in construction of samadhis in future,’’ said Muniraju. Will the BBMP speed up clearing of encroachments at the burial ground? Now, the ball lies in BBMP’s court. We will have to wait and watch.
