BERHAMPUR: Despite repeated attempts of the forest officials to shoo them away, the elephants have stayed put in the forest near Alapur village under Khalikote forest range. The herd comprising 12 elephants, including a tusker, attacked one Makara Tarei on Wednesday. Though the villagers managed to drive the animals away by burning tyres, Tarei had to be shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here with a fractured leg. By the time forest officials reached the village, the herd had already destroyed paddy crop over 20 acres. While chasing the elephants, a forest staffer Hrushikesh Misra fractured his leg when an elephant turned around and attacked him.
