The Hague Dutch lawmakers are to invite exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama to parliament despite a warning from China that the visit would harm relations between the two nations.
A lawmaker for the ruling Christian Democrats has also sharply criticised China's ambassador for attempting to interfere with Dutch politics. The ambassador sent a letter to the chairman of the foreign affairs committee urging lawmakers not to invite the Dalai Lama.
Netherlands Legislator Maarten Haverkamp said today said Dutch lawmakers did not interfere with who the Chinese People's Congress meets and expected the same respect from the Chinese ambassador.
The Dalai Lama is expected to visit parliament in June.
The Chinese ambassador could not be reached for comment.
