Mumbai: After nearly 40 couples were rounded up in a raid by the Malwani police, Mumbai Police chief Rakesh Maria has issued a diktat to police officers not to harass couples in public places.

Maria issued a circular saying that action will be taken if the directive is violated.

Consenting couples were allegedly dragged out of their hotel rooms and were subjected to humiliation and harassment in the hands of Mumbai Police. Police though claimed that raids were held at the hotels of Aksa beach following complaints by locals regarding acts of public indecency.
