New Delhi: Captain of the Indian cricket team Mahendra Singh Dhoni and ace shooter Abhinav Bindra were on Tuesday conferred with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army by President Pratibha Patil.

The two distinguished sportsmen were bestowed upon the honorary rank in the Territorial Army for their outstanding contribution in the field of cricket and shooting, and their commitment to the Army on various occasions.

MS Dhoni led India to World Cup victory earlier this year and was instrumental in taking India to the No. 1 spot in Test rankings for the first time ever.

Bindra has accomplished what none of the Indian sportsperson have ever achieved, i.e., winning the only individual Olympic gold medal, which he won in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
