Delhi: Malnourished sisters to get monthly pension
Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit has announced an assistance of Rs 1 lakh and a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 each for the two women.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday announced an assistance of Rs one lakh and a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 each to two malnourished sisters, who did not step out of their house for six years before they were rescued by neighbours and relatives last week.

The sisters - Mamta (40) and Neeraja (29) - are currently recuperating at Ambedkar hospital where they were admitted on June 16 after being rescued from their Rohini residence in a serious condition.

Dikshit said the government will also provide a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 to their 79-year-old mother Nirmala Devi, besides giving the family an assistance of Rs 10,000 to meet their urgent needs.

Mamta, who is divorced and has a teenaged son, and her sister Neerja never ventured out of their house for years and had confined themselves to their house. Some relatives used to help them financially as they did not have any source of income.

Both the sisters were malnourished and Mamta was bed-ridden.
