Facing financial problems, a man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Souter Ganj area in Kanpur, police said.
Amarnath Gupta was found hanging from a fan by his family on Monday night, following which they called the police, a police spokesperson said.
Gupta, 45, ran a flour mill and a retail shop. Additionally, he worked with touts for sorting out electricity connection-related issues and took money from people for getting their power bills reduced, police said.
He had taken money from many people in the recent past to resolve their electricity-related problems, but could not get the work done.
People had been asking him to return the money. But he had spent all the money and his shops were also not doing well, so he could not return it. Unable to take the pressure from the people, he resorted to the extreme step, they said.
