THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: While the state CPM is on the threshold of organising conferences from branch-levels to the state-level ahead of the next party congress, the state secretariat and state committee meetings will take place from Saturday to Monday. The branch-level conferences are beginning on Thursday and it is expected to be completed by October 14.The local committee-level meetings will begin from October 15 and conclude by November 15. The area committee-level meetings will be held from November 15 to December 15.In view of the events of local importance and festivals, the branch conferences had already started in the first week of this month itself in Idukki and Kasargod districts. In Alappuzha district, the branch conferences have been advanced by three days owing to the scheduled boat races in the district. As the party fund mobilisation is yet to complete in the Kollam district, the branch conferences will commence only on September 20.The guidelines for the conferences and organisational elections have already been sent to the factions in the form of a party letter. Though elections are permitted if found necessary, factional elections will not be allowed this time, according to party sources. Those interested in contesting against the panel may be allowed to contest. If the elections are found necessary at the branch-level it will be held only through secret ballot. But the election of the branch secretaries will be held through open voting. The CPM state secretariat will discuss the preparations for the party congress. One of the major issues, which will come for discussion, is the alleged misconduct of Ernakulam former district secretary Gopi Kottamurickal. The secretariat is likely to recommend disciplinary action against him. It is most likely that he will be demoted without causing further confusion. The delay caused in initiating action against Kannur former district secretary P Sasi had put the party in poor light. The reluctance shown by the official faction of the party had proved costly during the Assembly elections. In view of this, it is unlikely for the state committee to delay action against Gopi Kottamurickal. As the party has already removed him from the district secretary’s post, it is certain that he will have to face the music. As he is still a member of the state committee, the party will be taking serious note of his misconduct. However, he is unlikely to get the same treatment which Sasi had received from the party. General secretary Prakash Karat will be attending the secretariat and state committee meetings. The meetings will also discuss various issues which could be used against the State Government. The hike in the petrol prices and police excess on the protesting SFI and DYFI workers and the prospect of directing the public wrath over the petrol price hike will be figured in the discussions.
