Nandigram (West Bengal): The uneasy lull in Nandigram, which followed the clashes over the proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the area was broken on Friday when the between members of Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee and CPI-M supporters.
The Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee comprises the Trinamool Congress, SUCI and Naxal activists and its activists attacked CPI-M activists.
Firearms and bombs were used in the clashes and the houses of CPI-M members were torched.
Nandigram has been witnessing sporadic clashes between supporters of the CPI-M and the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee, which is spearheading the agitation against land acquisition for a SEZ.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Raj Kanojia, was quoted by news agency PTI as saying that the violence broke out in Gokulpara village and its adjoining areas in which several houses were damaged.
Members of the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee, told PTI that three of their members were kidnapped by CPI-M workers.
The missing villagers were identified as Amal Maity of Gokulnagar village, Rangan Das of Kalicharanpur village and Sankar Sihi of Jalpai village.
The IGP, however, said he did not have any report of anyone going missing in Nandigram.
The members alleged a mob of 200 to 300 people also set ablaze four houses, including the bakery run by Maity at Tekhali Bazar village, where jewellery and garment shops were looted.
Nandigram has witnessed continuing violence since January against the acquisition of land, leaving six dead early last month. Recently, the daughter of a CPI-M supporter was also found murdered.
The villagers in Nandigram dug up roads, threw logs and moved with arms to prevent the entry of police or administrative authorities in a violent resistance movement against acquisition.
