New Delhi: CPI-M condemned the "brutal" lathicharge on medicos protesting reservation in higher education in different parts of the country on Monday.

CPI-M leaders suggested that talks should be held and various other options, including increasing the number of seats, should be explored to resolve the issue expeditiously.

Asking the media and political parties not to whip up emotions on the reservation issue, party leaders Mohammad Salim and Basudeb Acharia asked the government to initiate a dialogue to resolve the matter.

CPI-M leaders stressed upon the issue to be taken seriously by the government soon so as not to give chance to "casteist elements to exploit the emotive issue".

"We can't deny reservations to the weaker sections as the country has been experiencing casteism for thousands of years. Steps have to be taken to uplift these sections. All political parties have agreed to go by the Constitution and its provisions in this regard," said the CPI-M leader Mohammad Salim.

However, supporting the students' concerns about limited number of seats in highly specialised courses, which they can avail of only through stiff competition, he said steps could be taken to increase the number of seats.

"These concerns (of the medicos) are being exploited. I would appeal to the students not to fall prey to these casteist machinations," he said and asked political parties not to "whip up passions clandestinely" as all of them had supported the legislation on reservation in Parliament.

The matter should be resolved through discussions involving all concerned expeditiously so that no room is given to elements trying to divide the society, Salim said.
