BANGALORE: Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL), the apex licensing arm of the Indian music industry, has won in the three prominent cases of music copyright violation/infringement against Event and Entertainment Management Association (EEMA), The Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) and Bangalore Fashion Week (BFW).
PPL claimed that Dream Merchants and The Ottera Hotel - the organisers of Bangalore Fashion Week - have been violating the copyright law since 2009, by not paying the requisite music fee for the music played at the fashion shows organised in July, 2009 and January, 2010. According to PPL, the organisers did not have a valid licence to play the music during the shows between July 23 and 26, 2009.

Following this, the Phonographic Performance Limited filed an FIR against Dream Merchants and The Ottera Hotel in the Electronics City police station.

However, no interim order was passed by the lower court and the court asked the defaulters to submit a sum of `1,75,000. Thereafter, PPL appealed to the High Court.

'Big Win'

Citing that the biggest challenges faced by the music industry was the violation of music copyrights PPL said that they had undertaken a national campaign spread over several cities where it obtains injunctions from various courts against all defaulting venues.
