CHENNAI: The month of February may be remembered the world over for Valentine’s Day, but the members and student volunteers of the Citizen Consumer Club of Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College will remember this month for their achievements in spreading consumer awareness. For the first time ever, a community service club from a higher educational institution has organised an outreach camp to a neighbouring state for spreading consumer awareness, particularly among the rural population and the student community at large. For three days, from February 16, the group comprising 30 students was taken to Hunsur taluk in Mysore and Mandya districts of Karnataka where along with fun and frolic, the students involved themselves in creating consumer awareness. The key point that was emphasised was how a consumer should act when he is exploited and the ways to be an Aware, Alert and Active consumer. The students went to three different cadres of schools, a primary school and a middle school at Hunsur Taluk and a pre-university at Mandya District and interacted with the children and had a rich experience. It would not be exaggeration to say that not less than 1,500 students had benefited from this programme. The College Management, the Principal and the Civil Supplies Department of Tamil Nadu have always been supportive of all the endeavours of the Citizen Consumer Club and their role in this historic venture has been really helpful in achieving this milestone.
