COIMBATORE: In a tragic incident, a 35-year- old construction worker was killed on the spot when the sunshade of an old building caved in on him at Brooke Bond Road here on Monday. According to sources, C Perumal from Usilampatti in Madurai, was engaged in the demolition work of an old building, which once housed the office of Assistant Divisional Engineer, National Highways.Thirupathi, a Coimbatore-based contractor had taken the contract for the demolition work and engaged Perumal and his father-in-law Mokkaichami fot it. He had also provided them accommodation on the building premises.Around 11.30 am on Monday, Perumal was hammering the sunshade when it collapsed, killing him on the spot. On information, the police rushed to the spot and recovered the body which was trapped under the debris after a half-an-hour struggle. The body was later sent to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. Police arrested Thirupathi and the mason Vimal. They were later remanded to judicial custody.Perumal is survived by his wife and two children.
