Captain Amarinder Singh asserted that the situation was in favour of the Congress in Punjab.

New Delhi: The Congress has fielded former Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh against senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley from Amritsar constituency in the upcoming general elections.

Singh's name was announced by the Congress in its fifth list consisting of 26 candidates on Friday. However, the Congress hasn't yet reached any decision on putting up a candidate from Varanasi to take on BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

The Congress leader had earlier expressed that he was ready to take on Arun Jaitley from Amritsar constituency. Speaking to CNN-IBN he said, "I had told Congress president Sonia Gandhi that I would like to concentrate on my own seat in Patiala and focus on campaigning in Punjab. But if the Congress chief wants me to contest the general elections from Amritsar then I will do so."

Amarinder Singh had also asserted that the situation was in favour of the Congress in Punjab. He said, "There is no anti-incumbency against Congress in Punjab."
