New Delhi: After the violence at Nandigram in East Midnapore district on Sunday, the Congress and Trinamool Congress separately called Bengal bandh on Monday.
A clash broke out between CPM supporters and the protesting farmers early on Sunday morning at Nandigram over acquisition of land for SEZ by Indonesia's Salim Group.
The Congress called a 24-hour bandh, the Trinamool Congress-led 'Krishijami Bachao Committee' (Save Farmland Committee) has given a call for a 12-hour bandh.
Congress Working President Pradip Bhattacharjee told PTI that the bandh was called to protest against the "terror created by CPI(M) cadres" at Nandigram.
Mukul Roy, general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, said the agitation against "forcible acquisition of farmland cannot be cowed down by use of force by the police and CPI(M) hooligans".
Both the Congress and the Trinamool kept the IT sector out of the purview of the bandh.
The Trinamool Congress headed Bhumi Uchched Birodhi (Land Eviction Resistence) Committee has already called a 24-hour Nandigram bandh today. The Committee also include left opposition party SUCI, Muslim group Jamaat-e-ulema-e-Hind and some naxalite outfits.
