A scholar, Prof Canrong said many Chinese believe the CIA supports the Dalai Lama.

New Delhi: Beijing is pointing fingers at the Dalai Lama for last week's riots by Tibetans across the world. But now China is suspecting he is getting more than moral support from Washington. The latter's aim – to embarrass China ahead of the Olympics.

A visiting Chinese scholar to India explained his country’s stance.

“There is no proof of American involvement in the recent events but many Chinese believe the CIA funds the government in Dharamshala,” said Professor Jin Canrong, of China’s Renmin University.

The Chinese are in damage control mode. But an international investigation into last week's protests, as demanded by the Dalai lama, has been virtually ruled out.

“There is no international investigation but later when things settle down, they would probably invite in media to observe,” said Canrong.

Beijing's priority will be to calm things down, by force if need be. But it is also likely to look to the Dalai Lama himself to call for peace.

India, while not welcome as a mediator, could persuade the spiritual guru to make that call.

“India has been responsible (for encouraging the Dalai Lama) and the Chinese government recognises that,” Canrong stated.

While India walks a tightrope, its western neighbour has no such compulsions.

On Monday, Pakistan declared Tibet was China's internal issue and that it was opposed to any attempt to undermine China's territorial integrity.
