BANGALORE: The Beggars Rehabilitation Centre at Sumanahalli on Magadi Road on the outskirts of the city has changed a lot from the past two years after a series of deaths in August 2010. There are lot more development activities taking place at the centre as the Social Welfare Department has installed 64 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to keep a watch on the activities of the beggars. They are being given the Aadhar cards and the department has issued bio-metric cards to mark their attendance. The department is now planning to introduce telemedicine to provide clinical health care, which will help eliminate distance barriers and improve access to medical services at the centre. It will be very useful to save lives in emergency situations. The centre is now a beehive of activity with inmates involved in a host of activities, including development of job skills to yoga.A large well-stocked library also operates on its premises. The beggars have been trained to do various works which can help them start life afresh.Ravikumar, who is incharge of the centre, said, “The Social Welfare Department is shortly going to install telemedicine facilities, which will help in critical and emergency situations. We are also conducting personality development camps so that they can lead a better life."
