BANGALORE: E very new thought is a lease of life,” says Dimpy Menon whose sculptures always signify a certain amount of playfulness. Likewise, her bronzes are a tribute to the fleeting moments that resonate in our minds like a line of poetry or a bar of music. Capturing the human form in an array of moments, Dimpy introduces grace and control in all her figures with ease. Her latest work titled Spirit of Life is a celebration of human spirit and freedom. Some of her works including In Anticipation and Take Off are a testimony to our collective consciousness. The rough granite bases play off against the metal, thereby enhancing the richness of the bronzes. Fluidity and dynamism exhibited in each of her works are commendable. In conversation with City Express, Dimpy tells us about her latest exhibition and future plans. Tell us about your latest work Spirit of Life I believe that the bronzes continue my engagement with the human form and are physical manifestations of the resilience, joy, strength, wonder, and freedom of the human spirit. There is a happy marriage between human qualities and the human form as represented by the fluid bronzes. The focus is on movement in various stages: the beginning, the continuation and the dissolution. It is also the relationship of the form with shapes and spaces. Hence the significance of the flowing ribbon, and the geometric bases and frames. Much thought has gone into the creation of the tension and balance that the forms need to convey in that moment of movement. What is it about art that intrigues you the most? The fact that art is an immediate experience interests me. There is no investment in terms of experience for the viewer unlike a book which needs to be read. Art seeps in even when the viewer is unaware. The response is a spontaneous one. From the artist’s point, while creating a work one is able to lose oneself and become oblivious to mundane things. It transports me to a joyous place. How do you showcase the freedom of human spirit in your work?I use the human form as the language through which I express the spirit of life and its infinite possibilities. I capture different moods of the spectrum in various movements that the human form can achieve.Do you think more and more people are developing an interest in sculpting today?Yes, right now sculpture is the ‘in thing’. People today have woken up to the three-dimensional qualities of sculpture. Private collectors are happy to have sculptures in their homes unlike a few years ago. Also, corporates and the hospitality sector believe that the sculpture can showcase their philosophies better. What are you trying to achieve in your life through art?I believe that as long as I can be creative I will stay alive and youthful. Each new thought is a lease of life. Artists, poets, composers have all discovered this for themselves through the ages. I hope my work instills a sense of elation and positivity.Dimpy Menon’s work will be on display at Alila Bangalore till April 8.
