Board says phones are a distraction, 'recommends' ban.

New Delhi: The Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools to restrict cellphones in schools, claiming they were “misused” and were a distraction.

“There have been enough lessons learnt in the past regarding the use of mobile phones and the Board strongly recommends that students should be convinced about not carrying mobile phones to the school," said a CBSE circular sent to schools.

The circular also instructs principals, teachers and other staff members to refrain from using mobile phones. It particularly frowns upon cellphones with cameras. "The cameras, which are a common feature now in most mobile phones, can also be misused,” the circular said.

CBSE claims even if the mobiles are in silent mode, they can still be a source of distraction within the classroom as students send text messages during classes and assignments.
