Mumbai: The CBI on Thursday deposited all the 14 CDs containing a transcript of talks between prime accused Abdul Karim Telgi and others at a special Pune court.
The move came in pursuance of a Bombay High Court order, which had asked the central agency to hand over to the 67 accused and copies of the CDs to the special court.
The copies will be circulated to all the accused in Yerawada Central Jail and to the five who are out on bail. Many important names, including politicians and police, are believed to be on the list.
This now paves the way for the commencement of trial in the multi-crore fake stamp paper scam case.
The trial in the special court in Pune could not proceed as the accused raised objections over the CBI submitting CDs that contained only conversations related to the case.
When the accused urged for copies of the entire conversations recorded by the Karnataka Government between Telgi and others, the High Court observed that there was no harm in giving all the transcripts to the accused.
The CBI filed an affidavit, saying it was ready to give three CDs that contained excerpts of the telephonic talks Telgi had with others relating to this case. For the remaining CDs, it would have to obtain permission from Delhi.
The Mumbai HC then directed the CBI to hand over copies of the three CDs to the accused immediately and the remaining 11 CDs within a week after seeking permission of higher-ups in Delhi.
The Karnataka Government had recorded telephonic talks between Telgi and others when Telgi was lodged in a jail a few years back. According to the police, these talks throw light on the fake stamp paper syndicate run by Telgi.
