New Delhi: There's more trouble for the Air India in addition to the financial crisis that the national carrier is already going through. The national carrier has been facing delays for close to a month due to severe cabin crew shortage.
According to sources, the National Aviation Company Limited (NACIL), which was formed after the merger between Air India and the Indian Airlines, is currently facing a shortage of 200 cabin crew members.
The crisis has been further aggravated by the incompatibility between regulations governing the two airlines. While Air India's rules allow hiring on contractual basis, it is not possible in the case of Indian Airlines.
Moreover, sources tell CNN-IBN that it would take another six to seven months to hire and train fresh cabin crew. Therefore, it might not be possible for NACIL to overcome shortage any time soon.
The other cause of crisis for the airlines is that as per flying regulations, a cabin crew member is allowed a maximum 1000 hours of flight in a year.
There are also reports that the cash-strapped airline has delayed the payment of salaries to its employees for March. The salaries have been deferred by a week to April 7. In June last year also, it had postponed salaries by 2 weeks due to non- availability of funds.
