Boat mishap: Cong wants judicial probe
KPCC demanded a judicial probe into the boat mishap in Kochi in Kerala which claimed the lives of 18 people.

New Delhi: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Ramesh Chennithala on Wednesday demanded a judicial probe into the boat mishap in Kochi in Kerala which claimed the lives of 18 people, including 15 school children.

Chennithala said the government should immediately announce financial assistance to the relatives of the dead.

He appreciated the work the local people had done to rescue those in the boat, adding that he said government should take steps to ensure that such mishaps did not recur.

Opposition leader Oommen Chandy also reached the hospital where the bodies have been kept.

About 100 students and staff left the school for the picnic on the Tuesday morning. They went for the boat ride by evening after visiting the Thattekad bird sanctuary.

The tragedy struck when one of the three boats the group boarded capsized in the Periyar river.

Rescue operations were hampered by poor visibility and lack of equipment. But nineteen people were taken safely ashore by the late night.
