The Bench and the Bar of the Madras High Court on Monday bade farewell to Justice Darmar Murugesan, who was elevated as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court last week. Justice Murugesan was appointed as a judge of the Madras High Court in March, 2000. With his elevation and transfer, the strength of the bench here is down to 52 judges.
In his farewell address, Advocate-General A Navaneethakrishnan pointed out that Justice Murugesan had disposed of a whopping 1.25 lakh cases during his tenure of over 12-1/2 years. It was not just a quantitative disposal, but a truly qualitative disposal, he added.
In his emotional reply, Justice Murugesan described young lawyers were future assets. Their interest must be safeguarded and they must be guided by the senior members of the Bar. Most of the young lawyers have a rural background and come from poor families. At their entry point into the profession, they ought to be supported financially by the senior members, he said, and urged senior advocates to encourage the young talent to maintain the traditions set by the elders.
In turn, junior lawyers should maintain the rich traditions and the ideals of the profession and render their fullest co-operation to the bench for effective dispensation of justice to the needy, he added.
