Universal Pictures has made a deal with Mattel to build a live action film around Barbie.

Los Angeles: She is the most coveted doll by millions of children across the globe and now Barbie, who recently completed 50 years of her existence, is all set to come alive for the first time in a motion picture.

Universal Pictures has made a deal with Mattel to build a live action film around Barbie, who has seen many incarnations in her 50-year-old life.

Laurence Mark, who is behind Meryl Streep starrer Julie & Julia, is all set to produce the movie, Variety online reported.

"Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands," said Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger. "

So many representations of Barbie frequent pop culture, but never before has she been brought to life in a motion picture.

We're grateful to Mattel for entrusting us with this extraordinary opportunity," he said. The film will be a family-friendly venture and the studio is currently hunting for the scriptwriter.

Shmuger said he felt fortunate to get the job and said there is no shortage of plot possibilities, since Barbie has held more than 120 jobs over the years.

"Barbie is the most popular girl in the world, and has always been a wonderfully aspirational figure, so we must do her proud," he said.

There have been 16 animated titles on Barbie but the iconic doll has never starred in a movie and Mattel's senior VP Richard Dickson said that no timetable has been set for Barbie's big screen debut.

"The utmost concern is to make sure every detail is right. Rather than a timetable, I'm more interested in making sure we deliver the right product," he said.
