HYDERABAD: The air outside the critical care unit of Apollo Hospital hung heavy, a mixture of grief tinged with faint hope of a miracle. The families of Mohammed Azharuddin’s son Ayazuddin and his nephew Ajmal-ur Rehman gathered in little huddles, hoping that a miracle will bring back the former from the jaws of death while at the same time mourning the death of the latter.Ever since news of the boys’ hideous bike accident broke on Sunday, a stream of relatives and VIPs have been visiting the hospital, trying to impart courage to the family. The visitors have included actors Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna, politicians Chandrababu Naidu, Purandeswari, Vilas Rao Deshmukh, the Owaisi brothers, fellow sportsmen like Sania Mirza and Mohammad Kaif and many relatives down from Dubai. Asad Owaisi said, “Ayaz’s condition is critical. We are all praying to that he recovers.” Iftekar Ahmed Shareef, one of Azharuddin’s uncles, said, “Ayaz is recovering. To me, his condition today looks much better than yesterday. The doctors are trying their best. They said the internal bleeding has come down from 1 litre per hour to 250 ml. This is surely an improvement. The doctors will have a meeting on Tuesday and decide the next step.”A cleric Maulana Syed Kazim Pasha Khadri also visited the family and conferred blessings upon the boy. He said, “The doctors will do what they can. We have to pray.”Several of Ayaz’s friends have been keeping a vigil at the hospital since Sunday night, depressed over the death of a friend and hoping for the recovery of another. One of them said, “Ayaz is passionate about bikes. He loved riding. As a friend he was always helpful.’’Several of them were miffed by reports that he had participated in bike races with wagers of Rs 1 lakh. “That’s false. Ayaz is nothing like that,” said one of them.
