An awareness class on cancer and obesity reduction was held at the Kolenchery Kadayiruppu Sree Narayana Gurukulam College of Engineering.
Medical director of Kakkanad Sunrise Hospital Dr R Padmakumar presented the class. Speaking on the lifestyle changes of the Indians, the doctor said that at least 20 per cent of Indians are obese of which 24.3 per cent are men.
Obesity also invariably leads to diabetes, another disease in which India is ranked number one. Kerala has also got its own record number of diabetic patients in the state.
At least 92 per cent of diabetic problems can be solved through a better lifestyle. The trend is that it has reduced, studies have revealed.
Dr Padmakumar stated that the fat percent of those who have a body mass index of 35 can be reduced through surgery.
Studies have also shown that cervical cancer can be prevented by taking the Virus Human Pappiloma vaccination. The doctor said that cancer can be detected using the CT Scan.
Nano technology and biotechnology methods can also help detect early cancer through which a fatal issue can be sorted out.
Surveys also show that 80 to 90 per cent of cancer and other diseases are caused due to ignorance. The public is not either aware of the problems or are not willing to have the disease diagnosed in the initial stages.
