Several parts of Australia are experiencing sweltering heat with mercury rising close to 50 degree Celsius in parts of South-eastern part of the country. Victoria, South Australia and southern New South Wales over recent days have witnessed high temperatures and are expected to remain the same till the end of the week.
Heatwave in South-eastern Australia continued on Wednesday with temperatures forecast to again top 40 degrees Celsius in some areas. Victoria was facing a total fire ban and firefighters were battling to control 29 bushfires, including a large blaze near Lake Albacutya in the Mallee region, after attending to 256 separate blazes overnight. A two hectare fire in the Mount Cole National Park near Ararat was contained this morning.
Heatwave in Adelaide would continue as the city recorded its fourth hottest day on record on Tuesday reaching over 45 degree Celsius. The temperature was expected to hit 45 degree Celsius again on Wednesday, an ABC report said.
The city's record maximum is 46.1 degree Celsius, registered in January 1939. The South Australian town of Keith recorded the highest temperature in the country on Tuesday with 47.2 degree Celsius.
A woman was recovering in hospital with burns after her house was destroyed in one of about 350 bushfires across South Australia. Most fires were sparked by lightning strikes and at least 14 grassfires are still burning on Wednesday. Severe fire danger ratings have been declared across the state.
On Tuesday night, the woman was taken to hospital after being burnt while trying to save her home at Rockleigh, near Monarto Zoo, south-east of Adelaide.
